Scientists and clinicians are increasingly questioning the clinical application of dental implants made of titanium owing to a variety of adverse health effects that are increasingly being associated with this implant material. A lot of research has been conducted over the last years and a great number of publications have come out, arguing that ceramic implants made from zirconia might be a viable and sustainably healthy alternative to metal implants. Even though ceramic implants have been around for many years, the technological advancements surrounding metal-free dental implants have only recently started to gain momentum. Some of the resources that were put into metal alloy implants are only now starting to be put to some degree into ceramic implants. As a result, increasingly advanced ceramic implant surfaces are coming to the market. Also, two-piece ceramic implant systems are well-established today, allowing for greater flexibility in comparison to one-piece designs.
Against this background, the “Les implants céramique” course will be held in the city of Marche-en-Famenne in Belgium on 23 April. The one-day educational course aims to provide a comprehensive overview on the current state of ceramic implantology and to separate the true from the false in relation to zirconia dental implants in front of an audience of specialists in implant dentistry. The attendees can look forward to intriguing lectures from EACim founders Drs. Giancarlo Bianca (EACIM president) and Pascal Eppe (EACim secretary), and Prof. Eric Rompen, a Belgium-based researcher who is known for his landmark 2012 review examining the influence of different implant designs and materials on soft- and hard-tissue stability.
